Astragulus
Membranaceus
Other Names: Astragalus
membranaceus; Astragalus mongholicus;
Huang-qi; Milk-vetch root
Originally used in traditional Chinese
medicine to strengthen the immune system
and reduce the length of illness, Astragulus
Membranaceus is made from a plant native
to north Asia also found in cooler areas
of North America and Europe. The part
of the plant used for the supplement ingredient
is the root, which is cut, dried, and
sometimes dipped in honey before use.
Astragulus Membranaceus is also thought
to have antibacterial properties, and
is sometimes used topically. It is also
an anti-inflammatory and diuretic. Currently,
there are studies investigating this ingredient’s
use in recovery for chemotherapy and AIDS
patients. Further, Astragulus Membranaceus
is thought to be an antioxidant, meaning
it may protect against possible cancer-causing
free-radicals.
