Differences
between Products: Supplements, Vitamins,
Nutraceuticals, Homeopathics, and Herbals
Although the
terms are often used, and sometimes interchangeably,
there are distinct differences between
supplements,
vitamins, nutraceuticals,
homeopathics, and herbals,
and it is important to understand these
differences when labeling your products
so consumers are not misled. For example,
as the name implies, supplements are products
added to the diet to make up for any inadequacies
and provide an extra boost when needed.
On the other hand, homeopathic
medicines are used when there is some
type of illness present, not simply for
a deficiency.
Vitamins, although
similar to supplements, are those nutrients
needed for proper cell function. The term
“vitamins” refers to a specific
set of nutrients, while a supplement may
have a mixture of vitamins, minerals,
and other nutrients necessary for good
health. Herbal products are those made
from plant sources, specifically those
known as herbs. Nutraceuticals are products
that are based on naturally occurring
foods rather than extracts or more artificial
ingredients, and these naturally occurring
foods are thought to have positive effects
on the body and health. Further, nutraceuticals
are generally blends and mixes of different
ingredients.
