Israel Brekhman: Grandfather of Adaptogens

Born in 1921, Dr. Israel Brekhman was a Russian scientist who is arguably the single reason we have access to and knowledge of the many benefits of adaptogenic herbs. Having studied these amazing herbs for over 40 years, Dr. Israel Brekhman discovered many invaluable attributes of adaptogens, including their ability to help the body cope with stress and enhance athletic performance.

Early in his life, Dr. Brekhman realized the incredible negative effect that prolonged stress can have on both the body and the mind, and he devoted his life to searching for ways to resist the ravages of time and stress, as well as reduce recuperation time and enhance athletic performance. With the guidance of his mentor Dr. N. Lazarev , Dr. Israel Brekhman soon realized that in order to find the answer to his questions, he would have to go deep into the wild and find nature untouched. Leaving St. Petersburg, Russia, he travelled far across the continent to the Primorye, a far eastern portion of Russia in which he found an abundance of rare, untouched wild. In his search for a way to enhance his overall health, Dr. Israel Brekhman discovered Eleuthercoccus, which he named King of Adaptogens for its supreme power in helping to relieve and even to prevent stress and its negative effects on the body and mind. However, he also discovered a number of plants when, which used both alone or in combination with one another, had the phenomenal ability to reduce the effects of stress, allowing the body to adapt and to cope. Because of these powers, the plants were named “adaptogens.”

Using his discoveries, Dr. Brekhman soon was called upon to serve his country, the former Soviet Union. Applying the wonders of adaptogenic herbs to astronauts and athletes, he quickly gained fame, as did the amazing herbs. The astronauts experienced resistance against the stresses of space travel, including vertigo, while the athletes discovered that their strength, energy, and stamina were greatly increased, while the time required to recuperate was decreased. Word of Dr. Israel Brekhman and his adaptogenic herbs spread quickly, and he soon was assisting a variety of people, from chess players to ballerinas, all of whom experienced the benefits of increased resistance to stress and improved concentration.

In 1991, Dr. Israel Brekhman was finally able to bring his dream to the United States, and Vitarich Laboratories is proud to be one of the extremely few dietary supplement manufacturers able to offer the benefits of adaptogenic herbs. In fact, prior to his passing in 1994, Vitarich Laboratories had a direct, scientific relationship with Dr. Israel Brekhman, giving us unique insight and knowledge of his studies and adaptogens that cannot be found elsewhere.
