Wu Wei Zi in Chinese Medicine
Translated as “five flavor berry,” Wu Wei Zi (五味子) is also known in English as Schizandra. Although it is an adaptogenic herb, Wu Wei Zi is one of the 50 fundamental Chinese herbs for traditional medicine. Used in the past as a sexual tonic, Wu Wei Zi has been called a “yin/yang tonic” for its helpfulness in balancing the two opposing forces. Further, this substance is said to increase Jing, which is the energy or essence of the adrenals and kidneys.
In traditional Chinese medicine, Wu Wei Zi is used for a variety of ailments, including night sweats, chronic cough, and excessive thirst. Because of its adaptogenic ability to help maintain a state of normalcy, this herb is used on both sides of health issues. For example, it might be used for either an underactive kidney or an overactive kidney. Usually dried, Wu Wei Zi is often used to make tea and then ingested for the health effects, although the berries are also made into wine.
At Vitarich Laboratories, Wu Wei Zi (Schizandra) is used in our proprietary blend of adaptogenic herbs. If you’d like to learn more about including an adaptogen product with Wu Wei Zi in your line, call or e-mail us today.
